“Vanishing Cornwall”
My wife bought this book written by author Daphne du Maurier. She lived much of her life in Cornwall. The book is a collection of short stories and brief histories of people and places in Cornwall. It’s interesting, charming and romantic. Highly recommended!
Places
Info About The Places We’ll Visit And Paint
Tintagel
Tintagel is situated on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village and nearby Tintagel Castle are associated with the legends surrounding King Arthur. The castle is claimed to be the place of Arthur's conception which, in legend, happened because of an illicit rendezvous, facilitated by the wizard, Merlin.
Tintagel is the location of our lodging - Camelot Castle Estate - for the first three nights of our Cornish adventure.
Painters : Our first painting outing is Tuesday the 29th, when we’ll get introduced to the challenging beauty of the rugged Cornish coastline.
Port Issac
This place will look very familiar if you have watched the British tv comedy “Doc Martin”. I happen to be a fan of the show, and it is one of the main reasons I wanted to visit and paint in Cornwall. There’s plenty to see and do in this active fishing village.
Painters : We visit Port Issac on Wednesday the 30th and will have the chance to paint boats, rugged coast or iconic village scenes.
St. Ives - St. Michaels Mount
One of Cornwall’s most treasured towns, St Ives is famed for its picturesque cobbled streets and coastal allure. The town and surrounding area is renowned for its famous quality of light, which has drawn artists for over a century. The town is home to world-class art galleries, including the Tate St Ives. St Ives is known for excellent food and is home to the St Ives Brewery and its distinctive craft beers. St. Ives is the location of our next hotel, Tregenna Castle.
St Michael's Mount is a tidal island in Mount's Bay, near Penzance, in Cornwall, England. Historically, St Michael's Mount was an English counterpart of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, which is also a tidal island; it has a similar conical shape, though Mont-Saint-Michel is much taller. It is one of 43 unbridged tidal islands accessible by foot from mainland Britain.
Painters : We’ll have a chance to paint views of St. Michaels Mount On Thursday, July 1 when we travel from Tintagel to St. Ives/Penzance.
Painters Choice!
St. Ives remains our home base for the remaining four days of our time in Cornwall. There is much to see, do and paint in the town itself.
Painters : We have no bad options for the painting days in the last half of our trip.
Penzance, Porthleven, Mousehole, Landsend, and Merry Maidens are all compelling places to paint. We’ll decide where to go and what to paint day-by-day.
BTW : If you are on Instagram, look up ‘clarebowenartist’ - an artist from Cornwall, who posts many paintings of the harbor at Mousehole.
