"Country Home" - original watercolor landscape painting
Painting is 11” x 15” Framed to 16” x 20” in a simple dark molding
Summer is a favorite season of mine, as it is for many. This painting that is a celebration of summer and summer greens in light and shadow.
Summer paintings are popular with the public, but a challenge for the artist.
The big challenge is all the green - a color that can be “too much” in several different ways. Varying the value, temperature and intensity of the greens is a way to cover most of the bases while capturing the subtle variation in light, even on a bright day.
To a great extent, the work is an exercise in capturing shadow in lighter value than is common in summer scenes. Summer shadows are often the darkest elements in summer scenes.
For this painting with it's large foreground, mostly in shadow, I wanted to shift darker values into the trees and treelines in the middle ground near the homestead. The forground colors are cooled and neutralized creating the sense of shadow without resorting to a dark value that would carry too much visual weight.
