"Driving Through Mettowee" - watercolor landscape painting

Painting is 7 1/2”h x 11”w. Framed to 11” x 14”

A moody scene that features sky more than landscape. This painting started as a demonstration on how to paint rainy skies. The end effect was quite nice so a few details and refinements were added to finish it off.  The scene is inspired by the compelling Mettowee Valley that runs through the far western part of Vermont. The valley floor is broad and flat but bordered with high, steep hills that add drama and remind one that they are still in Vermont.

One of the features of this moody sky is the warm glow that filters through the gray clouds. The effect is easily created by layering a light and very fluid wash of a warm hue on the paper before applying the cooler and darker grays. The idea and method were both emphasized during the demo.

The painting is matted and mounted in archival materials and framed under glass.

Includes sealed backing and hanging wire installed.

This is a custom framing installation. The frame is 2” wide with medium red-brown cherry finish
