“Downhill Path” - watercolor landscape painting
Painting is 11” x 15” Framed to 16” x 20”.
This work explores three ideas : the time late in autumn when the shadows are rich with the color of fallen leaves, waning and weakening light that also occurs at that time of year, and the sense of “downhill-ness”.
I strive for two main things in all my watercolor paintings. The first and most important is capturing light. The second is finding the simplest way to express time and place.
My approach also relies on two things : compositional strength and using that small handful of basic watercolor techniques to their full. Combined, they offer possibilities for bold and subtle light effects and visual richness that seem to indicate more detail than is actually there.
This is one of those paintings where I am satisfied with both.
