Upcoming One Day Workshops
Make Friends With Shadows
Saturday, July 25, 2026 - 9am to 12 noon
Shadows Are Your Friends! They appear in almost every scene and as part of almost every subject so are essential elements in representational paintings.
They are not objects themselves, but become part of and are shaped by the items they touch.
They are by nature abstract in reality which makes them valuable and adaptable elements in your painting composition.
In this class you’ll learn how to apply shadows to your work, using them both compositionally to strengthen the painting and representationally to create the sense of light and form.
Pre-class information including materials, background info and drawing layouts will go out about 10 days before class.

Edges : The Key To Focus And Representation
Saturday, August 29, 2026 - 9am to 12 noon
Edge textures are important symbols that help our viewers make sense of the scene and subject we are representing.
Every object in our paintings have edges that represent how and where two shapes meet in the two-dimensional space on the surface of our paper.
The texture along these edges have the potential to simultaneously perform three tasks: helping to represent the object, helping to define space, and supporting the underlying design.
This class shows how to place edges in a way that does all three things, enhancing both the representational quality and compositional focus to your paintings.
Pre-class information will be sent out about 10 days prior to class.
